Game Cities Guide

Zombies and infected animals

The cities are overrun by ordinary people who turned — residents, workers, people passing through. They shamble around until they notice you: by sight, by noise and, in the dark, by your flashlight. The higher your survivor's level, the more varied the horde.

Zombie types

The Wanderer is the most common: slow but tough, and dangerous in groups. The Runner shows up from level 2, has less health and sprints after you once it sees you. The Spitter appears from level 4, has a swollen belly and spits acid from a distance; the acid leaves a puddle that keeps burning for a few seconds.

Champions

Every now and then a stronger zombie shows up with orange eyes: a champion. It takes more hits, hits harder and, in exchange, always drops a magic or better item. It is worth the fight — with full health and room to back off.

Infected animals

Dogs, cats, rats, sewer rats, pigeons and vultures were infected too. They are more of a nuisance than a killer: their damage is low, but they are fast, some fly and they come in packs. Some drop a health orb when they go down.

How to survive the hordes

  • Noise draws them in. Every firearm has a noise radius; everything inside it comes for you. On a crowded street, prefer your melee weapon.
  • Aim for the head. Headshots deal far more damage and put zombies down faster.
  • Use doors. Inside a building, zombies outside cannot reach you, and a closed door muffles sound.
  • Crouch. In stealth mode you move slowly and zombies only notice you up close; standing still, you stay hidden.
  • Roll to escape. The dodge roll gets you out of a surrounding mob, but it costs stamina — do not run out of it mid-horde.
